Methyl Acetate

Methyl Acetate is a clear, colorless liquid with a sweet, fruity odor reminiscent of nail polish remover or glue. It is fully miscible with most organic solvents (alcohols, ethers, ketones) and moderately soluble in water (25 g/L at 20°C). As a weakly polar ester, it is non-corrosive, pH-neutral, and chemically stable under normal conditions. Its rapid evaporation rate, low toxicity, and high solvency power make it a versatile alternative to acetone and ethyl acetate.

Application Sectors and Industries of Methyl Acetate

Paints & Coatings
Methyl Acetate serves as a fast-evaporating solvent in lacquers, varnishes, and automotive coatings. Its low viscosity enhances pigment dispersion and ensures smooth application with minimal residue.

Adhesives & Sealants
Used to dissolve acrylics, polyurethanes, and rubber-based adhesives. Improves bonding strength and drying speed in packaging, construction, and woodworking applications.

Printing Inks
Acts as a solvent for flexographic and gravure inks, providing rapid drying and high print quality on paper, plastics, and foils.

Nail Care & Cosmetics
A key ingredient in nail polish removers and cuticle treatments due to its mild odor and effective dissolution of nitrocellulose and resins.

Pharmaceuticals
Employed as a reaction solvent and extraction agent in antibiotic synthesis and drug formulation. Classified as a low-toxicity solvent for regulated processes.

Food Processing
Approved for decaffeinating coffee and tea (in specific regulated processes) while preserving flavor profiles. Also used in hop extraction for brewing.

Textile & Leather
Facilitates dye dispersion and finishing agent application in synthetic fabrics and leather goods, ensuring uniform color penetration.

Cleaning & Degreasing
Removes oils, greases, and adhesives from metal, glass, and electronic components. Preferred for its low toxicity compared to chlorinated solvents.

Plastics & Polymers
Processes cellulose acetate, PVC, and acrylic resins. Enhances plasticity and clarity in films, sheets, and molded products.

Chemical Manufacturing
Synthesizes intermediates like acetic anhydride and serves as a reagent in transesterification reactions for biodiesel production.

Automotive
Formulates windshield washer fluids and fuel additives to prevent ice formation in fuel lines.
