Monoethylene Glycol (MEG)

Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) is a clear, colorless, virtually odorless, and slightly viscous liquid. It is hygroscopic, absorbing moisture from the air, and is completely miscible with water, alcohols, aldehydes, and many other organic liquids. MEG is not corrosive and does not exhibit alkaline properties. It has a high boiling point and a low freezing point, making it suitable for applications requiring thermal stability and freeze protection. MEG is stable under normal conditions but should be handled with care due to its toxicity if ingested.

Application Sectors and Industries of Monoethylene Glycol

Polyester Resin & Fiber Production
MEG is a primary raw material in the manufacture of polyester resins and fibers, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It provides the necessary chemical structure for strong, durable, and versatile fibers used in textiles, packaging films, and plastic bottles.

Automotive (Antifreeze & Coolants)
MEG is the main component in automotive antifreeze and coolant formulations. Its low freezing point and high boiling point prevent engine fluids from freezing in winter and overheating in summer, ensuring optimal engine performance and protection against corrosion.

Heat Transfer Fluids
Used in heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration systems, MEG serves as an efficient heat transfer medium. Its thermal stability and miscibility with water make it ideal for maintaining controlled temperatures in industrial and commercial applications.

Natural Gas Dehydration
In the oil and gas sector, MEG is used to dehydrate natural gas streams. It absorbs water vapor, preventing hydrate formation and pipeline blockages, thereby ensuring safe and efficient gas transport.

Deicing Fluids
MEG is formulated into deicing fluids for airport runways, aircraft, and roadways. Its ability to lower the freezing point of water helps prevent ice formation, enhancing safety in transportation during cold weather.

Chemical Intermediates
MEG acts as a versatile intermediate in the synthesis of resins, plasticizers, and alkyd resins. These chemicals are essential in the production of paints, coatings, adhesives, and synthetic rubbers.

Textile Industry
As a humectant and softening agent, MEG is used in textile processing and fiber manufacturing. It improves the flexibility, durability, and moisture retention of fibers, enhancing textile quality.

Paper and Leather Processing
MEG is utilized as a humectant in paper and leather industries. It maintains moisture content, improves pliability, and prevents cracking in finished products.

Printing Inks and Paints
MEG is a solvent and viscosity modifier in printing inks and water-based paints. It ensures smooth application, consistent drying, and improved shelf life of finished products.

Electronics (Electrolytic Capacitors)
MEG serves as a medium for suspending conductive salts in electrolytic capacitors, providing stability and performance in electronic circuits and devices.
